Russel Brand Talks about his Recovery and New Film “Get Him To The Greek”.

Russel Brand was interviewed  about his upcoming role as an out-of-control Rockstar.

Brand, being Recovering Addict, talked  about his experiences on the set .

Question: Russell, there are so many elements in this movie that obviously mirror your own life. Was it challenging for you doing this in a sense that you know you’ve got the drugs and everything, and there’s the idea that you might relapse?

Brand: No. I didn’t think I would relapse. It was interesting, actually, the props person who gave me pretend cocaine to take in one scene which I don’t think was in the movie was himself 21 years clean. And I go, “what is this?” and it looked like cocaine and I had to snort it right up my hooter and he goes “this is organic matter.” That’s something that you read on a Nestle label. What is organic matter? Oh nothing. It just killed some kids. What? Yeah, so to answer your question, I’m in like a daily program of recovery and everything so one day at a time I’m alright. But doing them things it’s more the emotional stuff when you get all like angry or shout at people, but if your body don’t know that you’re not serious; apparently you can tell your brain any old information. It would just respond to it. If you just keep telling your brain that’s why that power of positive thinking which some people say is mumbo-jumbo and perhaps they’re correct, but apparently if you just fill your head with positive, it’ll all be alright.

Get Him To The Greek opens on 4 June 2010.

Not Afraid From “Recovery” By Eminem

This is a little excerpt from Eminem’s “Not Afraid”  Lyrics from his new album RECOVERY. Listen to it here.

” It was my decision to get clean, I did it for me
Admittedly I probably did it subliminally for you
So I could come back a brand new me, you helped see me through
And don’t even realise what you did, believe me you
I been through the ringer, but they can do little to the middle finger
I think I got a tear in my eye, I feel like the king of
My world, haters can make like bees with no stingers, and drop dead
No more beef flingers, no more drama from now on, I promise
To focus soley on handling my responsibility’s as a father
So I solemnly swear to always treat this roof like my daughters and raise it
You couldn’t lift a single shingle lonely
Cause the way I feel, I’m strong enough to go to the club
and lift the whole liquor counter up
Cause I’m raising the bar, I shoot for the moon
But I’m too busy gazing at stars, I feel amazing and…

I’m not afraid to take a stand
Everybody come take my hand
We’ll walk this road together, through the storm
Whatever weather, cold or warm
Just let you know that, you’re not alone
Holla if you feel that you’ve been down the same road!

Deadly, Ultra-Pure Heroin: One Of The Most Prevalent Forms in the Western United States

They call it “Black Tar”  for it’s dark gooey consistensy.

The DEA analysis of this type of  heroin purchased undercover found the drug was nearly 60 percent pure – the highest average purity in the U.S. At the same time, the price was among the lowest. To hook new users, dealers are selling heroin cheap – often around $10 a bag.

According to the story “Deadly, Ultra-Pure Heroin Arrives in US“, Black Tar is attracting a new generation of users who are caught off guard by its potency. (Read Story Here)

The Cost of Addiction

Today’s blog is inspired by this story in the LA Times about a man who was convicted on Tuesday for recruiting HIV patients to acquire addictive painkillers, such as OxyContin and Dilaudid.

53-year-old  Nathaniel Newhouse, was arrested two years ago following a surveillance operation in which he was caught with 29 bottles of highly addictive painkillers; a street value of $40,000 to $80,000, according to authorities.

The HIV patients who obtained the drugs for Newhouse had Medicare or Medi-Cal insurance. They were charged only a couple of dollars for a bottle of OxyContin, but the insurers were billed nearly $1,000. The Patients where paid $300 per trip – This would allow Newman to run a “mobile pharmacy” out of the trunks of multiple cars he either owned or rented.

He now faces a maximum term of 60 years in prison.

It’s sad to see how addiction triggers the demand on the streets of drugs that are meant to be beneficial.

What stood out for me  is the  lengths some people go to take advantage of  of the situation. According to DEA, “Every age-group has been affected by the relative prevalence of oxycodone availability and the perceived safety of oxycodone products by professionals. Sometimes seen as a “white-collar” addiction, oxycodone abuse has increased among all ethnic and economic groups.”

Simply praying on people who are already doomed with HIV, earns this man  the 60 years in prison that man might be facing.

The thousands of dollars lost by Medicare and Medi-Cal insurance that could be used for good purposes angers me the most. There are people -FAmily and friends- who can’t get insurance coverage when these  being drained by illicit activities by people with no morals.

Newman will go on to live in a prison cell that will cost Americans $45,000 per year.

Very, very sad.

National Drug Control Strategy Emphasizes Prevention and Treatment

Last Week, President Obama released the new drug recovery strategy for the country, which, by 2015, is expected to reduce the rate of youth drug use by 15 percent.

“By boosting community-based prevention, expanding treatment, strengthening law enforcement, and working collaboratively with our global partners, we will reduce drug use and the great damage it causes in our communities,” President Obama said during the unveiling of the strategy.

This new plan emphasizes prevention and treatment more than previous efforts. Of the additional $151 million in funding the administration is requesting for this program, there is a  13 percent increase for prevention initiatives and a little less than 4 percent for treatment.

“I am confident that when we take the steps outlined in this strategy, we will make our country stronger and our people healthier and safer.” The President added.

Gil Kerlikowske, National Drug Policy Director, who led a “listening tour” to assess the plan,  declared: “It touches virtually all of us, whether we know a family member, a friend, or a colleague who suffers from addiction or is in recovery, a police officer working to protect the community, or a parent striving to keep a child drug free.”
